Cloisonné Enamelling

Cloisonné means partition in French. These partitions are created with silver wire set into clear glass called flux in enameling. They are then filled with coloured enamel to suit your design. Cloisonné is usually used as stone replacement in jewellery and set with a bezel. We will create a piece of Cloisonné enamel from start to finish using traditional techniques of wire bending and wet packing enamel. The use of foils under glazes and rods to add depth to your work will be discussed. Cloisonné on a curved surface will be discussed. It is preferable to have previous enameling experience.

Students are to bring their own Jewellery hand tools.

In this introductory class, four groups of techniques in enameling are covered: dry application & painting and champleve.  In the champleve portion of the course, the etching techniques of intaglio, PNP and sugar lift are taught. The decorative applications of foils, glass rods and millefiori can also be incorporated into your artwork. It is helpful to have some previous jewellery making experience, but not necessary to create jewellery and small works of art.  The costs of silver and fine gold are extra.
